Peripheral blood eosinophil counts and bronchial responsiveness.

چکیده
Bronchial responsiveness (histamine PC20) and peripheral blood eosinophil counts were measured in 23 asthmatic subjects, of whom 14 were atopic and nine non-atopic. In the group as a whole there was an inverse correlation between baseline eosinophil count and histamine PC20 (r = -0.71; p less than 0.001). For atopic subjects a relationship between eosinophil count and histamine PC20 was observed (r = -0.74; p less than 0.01), but there was no correlation between eosinophil count and baseline FEV1 or baseline FEV1 and histamine PC20. For the non-atopic subjects a similar relationship between eosinophil count and histamine PC20 was seen (r = -0.68; p less than 0.05) and a less significant inverse correlation between baseline eosinophil count and baseline FEV1 (r = -0.65; p less than 0.05). These results show a relationship between eosinophil count and non-specific bronchial responsiveness in both atopic and non-atopic asthma.

Evidence for systemic rather than pulmonary eVects of interleukin-5 administration in asthma
Background—Interleukin 5 (IL-5) has an important role in mobilisation of eosinophils from the bone marrow and in their subsequent terminal diVerentiation. A study was undertaken to determine whether inhaled and intravenous IL-5 could induce pulmonary eosinophilia and bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) independently of these eVects. Methods—Nine mild asthmatics received inhaled (15 μg) or intra...

متن کاملActivated memory T helper cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from patients with atopic asthma: relation to asthma symptoms, lung function, and bronchial responsiveness.
BACKGROUND Bronchial mucosal inflammation and epithelial damage are characteristic features of asthma. Activation of T helper lymphocytes may contribute to this process by mechanisms including the release of cytokines promoting eosinophil infiltration and activation. METHODS Bronchial washings and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were obtained from 29 atopic asthmatic patients (19 with current sy...
متن کاملSputum eosinophilia can predict responsiveness to inhaled corticosteroid treatment in patients with overlap syndrome of COPD and asthma
BACKGROUND Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma may overlap and converge in older people (overlap syndrome). It was hypothesized that patients with overlap syndrome may have different clinical characteristics such as sputum eosinophilia, and better responsiveness to treatment with inhaled corticosteroid (ICS). METHODS Sixty-three patients with stable COPD (forced expiratory...
متن کاملImmediate and delayed effects of nitrogen dioxide exposure at an ambient level on bronchial responsiveness to histamine in subjects with asthma.
The time-kinetics of NO2 induced effects on bronchial responsiveness are poorly known as most observations have been made shortly after exposure. The aim of this study was to measure nonspecific bronchial responsiveness, lung function and inflammatory markers at different times after NO2 exposure in asthmatics. Nineteen subjects with mild asthma were exposed to either purified air or 488 microg...
